Modern pentathlon - what is it? Events, rules, how it works.
An épée in one hand, a swim cap in the other, with an obstacle course and a pistol along the way (a laser one, don’t worry). That’s modern pentathlon summed up in a single sentence.
What does this multi-discipline sport consist of, how are points counted, what does a competition day look like, and where did this sport come from in the first place? For that and much more, welcome to another SMMASH guide!
What is modern pentathlon and where did it come from?
Modern pentathlon is an Olympic multi-discipline sport governed by the UIPM (the international federation for this discipline).
Formally, it consists of 5 disciplines divided into 4 blocks. The word “modern” is mainly there to distinguish it from the ancient pentathlon. Just to make things clear before we go any further, one quick clarification: it has nothing to do with the so-called athletics pentathlon (ancient pentathlon), which consists of completely different disciplines.
Which events make up modern pentathlon today?
We admit the name can be a little misleading, because in practice there are indeed 5 disciplines, but they are held across 4 events: épée fencing, the obstacle course*, swimming and laser run.
Épée fencing
Two competitors face each other, and the bout lasts until one hit is scored or up to one minute. The system depends on the specific competition, but most often it follows a round-robin format.
Obstacle course
In practice, this means OCR100 (which we cover in another article on our sports blog). Here too, competitors race in pairs. Two athletes take on the course side by side, overcoming a set of standard obstacles. For fans of OCR races (that is, obstacle course races), it’s a familiar format.
Swimming
The competition takes place in a standard 50-metre pool, where each athlete must cover a set distance in freestyle.
Running with laser pistol shooting (the so-called laser run)
This consists of alternating shooting and running series, so it is somewhat similar to running intervals with breaks for shooting using specialised devices. As you can see, it combines 2 separate disciplines (running + shooting), which is why the whole format can still be called a pentathlon.
* This was introduced to replace horse riding, which remained an essential part of modern pentathlon up to the Olympic Games in Los Angeles (2028).
Scoring in modern pentathlon. How are points awarded and counted?
For the final result in each event, competitors receive points based on converting time or performance into a set number of points. In swimming, a time of 1:10 gives 250 points, and every 0.2 seconds faster or slower means 1 point more or less. In laser run, a time of 13:20 gives 500 points, and each second equals 1 point. You can find the exact conversion tables for fencing and the obstacle course in the UIPM regulations.
How a modern pentathlon competition unfolds - step by step
The standardisation of pentathlon covers both the types of events contested and their order. So fencing comes first, followed by the obstacle course, then swimming, and finally the laser run. Women and men compete separately, of course, and the format determines how each stage is run.
Taking part in OCR100 or fencing “forces” head-to-head competition in pairs, while running and swimming are events in which a larger group of pentathletes can compete at the same time.
