Want to start running 5 km? Check out a handful of valuable tips and pointers, and as a sporty bonus - a ready-made training plan for beginner runners as well.
Running 5 kilometres - what is worth knowing?
The 5 km run is considered one of the so-called fast road long-distance races. Why? Because on one hand, it requires endurance that lets you maintain a fairly steady pace over the whole distance. On the other hand, it is relatively short (lasting 15 - 45 minutes), which means you do not have to conserve energy quite as much during this effort. Especially when compared with half marathons or marathons.
Important: although it may seem a little strange - in sports terminology, a 5 km run is NOT the same as a 5,000-metre race. The first is a road race, usually held in specific cities. The second takes place on an indoor track or at a stadium and is run over a set number of laps (12.5 at a stadium and 25 indoors).
How to prepare for a 5-kilometre run?
If this is your first “encounter” with this type of discipline - start slowly and with shorter distances. Jumping straight into 5,000 metres can put you off further training and may even lead to more or less serious injuries.
Set aside at least 3 days a week in your schedule when you can make time for training. For example: Monday, Wednesday and Friday, or Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday. It is important that there is at least 1 rest day for recovery between each training day.
The beginnings of your running journey will not require a huge sacrifice on your part. Basically, around 60 minutes of training will be enough.

How long should training sessions for a 5 km run last?
The good news is that running 5 kilometres is one of the easiest distances from which many people begin their sporting journey.
If your activity level up to now has been exactly zero - you will probably need about 4 - 8 weeks to prepare for your first start, during which you will cover 5 km.

5 km run - other valuable tips
Do you think the right training plan for 5 kilometres will do the job? You are a bit right, but not entirely. Apart from proper training preparation, you also need to take care of a few other important aspects. Which ones? We have listed and described them below.
- First - diet. If fast food or other salty, sweet or fatty snacks have ruled your menu so far - it is time for major changes! Focus on healthy meals rich in vegetables, fruit and sources of protein.
- Second - recovery. We have covered it in more detail in a separate article on the SMMASH blog. If you want, feel free to read it. Here, we will only point out that elements such as stretching, massages, rest and sleep are the BASICS, not just an addition to your training.
- Third - clothing. Match it to the season and, above all, to your preferences. Pay special attention to footwear, which must be perfectly suited to your feet and offer the right level of cushioning. However, do not underestimate the other elements of your outfit either. In our shop, you will find a full set of essential clothing, including trousers, running shirts, and even running shorts.
What is a good 5 km time?
The current world record for the road 5 kilometre run is:
- 12:49 (for men), set by Berihu Aregawi from Ethiopia.
- 14:13 (for women), which, believe it or not… is jointly held by 2 athletes representing Kenya - Beatrice Chebet and Agnes Jebet Ngetich.
As you can see, to hold the men’s world record title, you need to run at a pace of 2:34, which means a staggering speed of over 23 km per hour. In the women’s case, it is only slightly slower at 2:51 min/km, which is just over 21 km/h.
So let’s come back down to earth a bit and talk about this kind of activity for less advanced runners. If you are just starting your sporting journey and your first race over this distance is ahead of you - simply try to enjoy yourself and get as much pleasure as possible from every metre you cover.
When this distance becomes second nature to you - only then will the time come to beat your own, and perhaps even other people’s, records. At the beginning, do not focus on results. Whether you run this distance in 15, 20, 30, 40 or even 60 minutes is of secondary, or perhaps even third-rate, importance.
What is a good 5 kilometre time for an amateur?
A 5 km time that can be considered good for an amateur runner depends on several factors. Before drawing conclusions, it is worth taking into account above all gender and age. It is perfectly normal that a 20-year-old runner will have an advantage over someone 20 or 30 years older (assuming both have a similar training level).
To simplify, we can assume the following result ranges:
- 30 - 35 min / 5 km (pace 6-7 min / km) is a great result for someone who is just starting out.
- 20 - 25 min / 5 km (pace 4-5 min / km) is a good result for someone who already has a few months of training behind them.
- Around 20 min / 5 km (pace below 4 min / km) is an excellent time for an experienced amateur runner.
- Anything under 20 minutes / 5 km can be considered an excellent result.
