Forest running - why is it worth it? The appeal and benefits of jogging in the woods.

Spring, summer, autumn or winter. Every season is different and comes with its own “charms” that you may encounter on running routes through the forest. Are you planning your first easy run or a more serious training session in the woods? But you are not entirely sure what to prepare for and how to do it? You will find all the key answers below.

We invite you to read this article, where you will discover the advantages of forest running and learn how to prepare for it properly and safely.

Why is it worth running in the forest?

Jogging along trails that run directly through the forest brings many benefits. Here are the most noticeable ones that are hard to disagree with:

#1 Variety

If running indoors, on a traditional treadmill or an electric treadmill, is something you consider monotonous, then the forest is definitely for you. The changing terrain, surface and even the scenery. All of this means that you simply cannot get bored while running in the forest.

#2 Comfort for body and mind

Just imagine it: a space free from smog (even in winter), far from speeding, smoking and noisy cars, and in addition surrounded by pleasant silence (“interrupted” only by the sounds of nature). Could there be a better place for sport and activity? Personally, we think... no.

#3 Health

Being close to nature in this way also means access to clean and fresh air that you will actually want to breathe in. There is no hiding it - jogging in the forest is also a “nod” to your heart and lungs, which will “return the favour” with better function and improved fitness in the future.

Planning to run in the forest? Remember your safety.

We hope this short introduction has already convinced you to be active in this kind of location. However, before you put together your outfit for running on forest trails and start tying your shoes, read a few useful tips.

First - choose safe and familiar routes

The forest is the natural home of animals. Keep that in mind when planning your running routes so as to reduce the risk of encountering them. It is not too bad if you come across deer, which will almost immediately disappear into the thick forest as soon as they see you. It is worse if, for example, you come face to face with a wild boar. In that case, we can assure you that you will take an accelerated course in climbing trees ;). If there is such a risk, also bring pepper spray.

Apart from avoiding wildlife, pay close attention to the terrain where you plan to exercise. Try to choose safe forest paths where the risk of tripping, falling and consequently sprains, fractures or other injuries will be minimal.

Still, a forest is a forest, so coming across stones, branches, roots, bushes and other “obstacles” on your way is completely natural. That is why, despite everything, you should always try to watch your step.

Second - take the essential gear with you

For longer runs, do not forget water and snacks. If you are planning running at night or in the evening, bring a torch (handheld or a head torch). Regardless of the time of day or the distance you want to cover, always carry your phone with you, so you can “stay in touch with the world” (for example in the event of an injury or accident).

If you are going to explore completely new terrain, remember to bring a clear map. Keep in mind that your smartphone may not get a signal in the forest. That is why you should download it directly to your device.

Third - dress appropriately for the season and weather conditions

Due to the nature of forest terrain, choosing the right footwear is absolutely essential. It should provide proper cushioning (not too much, so you can still “feel” the ground), solid lacing and, above all, an aggressive tread that reduces the risk of slipping.

We have already covered topics related to how to dress for running in summer, spring, autumn and winter (including on snow) on our blog. If you want to learn more, be sure to take a look here.

What clothing is suitable for running in the forest?

Apart from the obvious aspects such as choosing clothing suited to the temperature and weather conditions, factors such as your comfort and safety should also play a key role. With that in mind, try to choose sportswear that gives you comfort and freedom in every movement, while also supporting you in achieving better and better results. Products you can find in our store are ideal for this.

Men’s and women’s sports shirts will provide ideal thermoregulation, wick away excess moisture and, importantly, make you look really stylish.
