Which running accessories should you choose? Build a runner’s kit for every occasion.

Do you see running as something more than just an unpleasant leftover from PE lessons? Then you probably know perfectly well that for this activity to bring the results you expect and feel genuinely satisfying, you need more than just any shoes, a T-shirt and shorts. Read on to find out which items are worth having with you at all times, and which are best suited to specific occasions.

What running gear do you need apart from dedicated footwear? Discover a set of accessories that should be part of every runner’s kit.

How do you put together a set of running accessories?

Of course, at this point you might say that a complete set of running accessories should be put together with several important factors in mind. These include the time of year, the type of activity (recreation, training, competition), the location (asphalt, pavement, track, forest, fields, marshes), the type of terrain (flat, mountainous, etc.), and even the time of day or night. And you know what? We completely agree.

We took all of that into account as well. That’s why we’ve prepared two lists for you. One is more “general”, where you’ll find must-have accessories worth taking on every run. We’ve also added a second one, tailored to specific occasions.

Which running accessories are worth carrying with you at all times?

Here’s a list of the items that should be your priority.

  • First of all, your outfit, of course, which should be comfortable and suited to the conditions you run in. Try to choose clothing that gives you comfort, helps regulate body temperature and efficiently wicks away built-up moisture. Pay attention to your choice of footwear (size, cushioning, tread, etc.) as well as socks. If your calves tire quickly and cause pain, consider wearing compression socks or calf sleeves. If you run after dark, make sure your gear includes reflective elements, or take extra equipment with you, such as a vest or armband, so that other road users can see you more clearly.
  • Secondly, a running watch or smartphone. Personally, we can’t imagine physical activity without a device that lets you constantly monitor your training and track your progress. A good watch works especially well in this role, allowing you to measure parameters such as pace, distance covered, calories burned, duration, heart rate and much more.
  • Thirdly, a running belt, backpack or running shorts with a special pocket. These work brilliantly as accessories for carrying your phone while running, but also for taking a few other useful essentials with you. You can easily fit your keys, a small bottle of water and even a snack inside.
  • Fourthly, food. If you plan to run for more than 60 minutes, there’s a good chance you’ll need an extra boost of energy. This can come from energy bars, special gels or other light, easy-to-digest foods.

If you like having music with you while running, or you listen to audiobooks or podcasts, don’t forget to take your headphones. When choosing them, make sure they fit your ears well and, above all, stay in place. Wireless models, which you can connect to your phone via bluetooth technology, are definitely the better option here.

What running accessories should women have?

For women, it’s worth remembering one more part of a running kit: a sports bra that keeps everything in place, reduces strain on the spine and significantly improves both safety and comfort while running. This type of garment should be matched to breast size and body shape so that it keeps everything as stable as possible.

Running gear for specific occasions

Now let’s focus on running accessories that are worth matching to specific challenges and conditions.

Running accessories for winter and autumn

If you enjoy running in cooler weather, not necessarily only in the snow, remember this: winter running gear mainly means warm clothing, a scarf, gloves or a neck warmer, as well as headwear such as a hat or headband.

Running gear for summer and warm spring days

In summer, especially during hot weather, don’t forget to bring sunglasses and some form of headwear with you. This could be a cap, headband or bandana.

Accessories for runners on trails and in the mountains

If you specialise in ultra runs or simply plan to run in mountainous terrain, consider taking running poles with you. This kind of gear is especially useful when tackling steep climbs.

Items for running at night

If your activity might continue until dusk, or you simply like running in the evening or at night, get yourself a torch. You can choose a classic handheld one, but we think a head torch is the most comfortable option in this case.

Accessories for after running. What should you remember?

You could say that running alone is not everything. After all, truly satisfying training results are only achieved when you take care not just of the sporting aspect, but also recovery. So once you’ve finished a training session, make sure the following items are waiting for you at home after your run.

  • A roller (foam roller or ball) or an electric massager (a massage gun). After almost any effort, the muscles in your legs may feel tight and unnaturally stiff. Releasing them with the equipment mentioned above will speed up your recovery and reduce the risk of injury. What’s more, you can also use them as part of your relaxation routine.
  • Compression clothing – if after running you feel that your muscles are more sore and tired than usual, consider using specialist recovery wear. On the market you’ll find dedicated socks, calf sleeves and even full leggings designed to improve blood circulation through compression and in this way support muscle recovery.
  • Nutrition and supplementation – okay, these may not be “accessories” in the strict sense, but they are definitely worth taking into account. This type of effort also comes with significant “costs” for your body. We mean not only the calories lost, but especially valuable minerals and vitamins. To replenish them and also speed up recovery and tissue or muscle rebuilding, remember your diet. The exact meal balance should be adapted to your level of training and your sporting goals. After all, short-distance runners, who are often more muscular too, eat very differently from people whose goal is to cover long distances.

One thing is certain: nutrients supplied by natural foods such as fish, meat, vegetables and fruit should come first. Treat all kinds of supplements as additions that complement, not replace, wholesome meals.

Accessories and running gear ready? Time for running clothing!

Of course, you can’t forget one of the most important parts of the kit for anyone who runs, whether as an amateur or at a semi-professional or professional level. After all, your comfort, safety and results also depend on your footwear and clothing. You can find the latter online in the SMMASH store.
