What to eat after a workout? Tips and recipes for post-cardio and gym meals.

Recovery, better sleep, and above all, stronger training results. These are definitely the main benefits that a properly balanced meal can bring you after a solid and honestly completed training session. But what should you actually eat after this kind of effort to make the most of its potential and simply feel good? That’s exactly what we’ll look at in the rest of this blog post.

Check out our tips on healthy, balanced meals matched to specific activities that are worth eating after training.

P.S. If you take a comprehensive approach to your training, then you’re probably also interested in meals worth taking care of before training. Right? If so, take a look at this article, where we discussed step by step everything related to what to eat before a workout.

Why is good-quality food after training one of the key elements?

Every training session, even the smallest one, leaves us a little depleted afterwards. We are, of course, talking about minerals lost through sweat, carbohydrates that fuel the body, and proteins responsible, among other things, for muscle building and recovery.

During exercise, the supply of each of these is reduced to a greater or lesser extent. This, in turn, means that right after training it is essential to replenish these “stores” so the body can draw on the nutrients it needs.

What ingredients should a post-workout meal include?

Just like with a pre-workout menu, your post-activity meal should include three groups of macronutrients, including:

  • Protein, which will rebuild tired and sometimes strained muscles and become a factor responsible for their further growth. The amount should be adjusted both to the type of training and your body weight (it is generally assumed to be around 2 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight per day). Valuable sources of this nutrient remain poultry and fish.
  • Carbohydrates, which will help you regain energy, especially after a longer workout. You can get them from vegetables, fruit, groats, pasta and bread, among other sources. It is assumed that the optimal level should average around 10 grams per kilogram of body weight per day.
  • Fats, which through olive oil, nuts or seeds, will provide you with many nutritional values.

What should you keep in mind when planning food after training?

It is worth matching this type of meal plan to factors such as:

First – the type of activity

This is definitely one of the key elements and the place to start when planning your diet. To simplify things, let’s assume 2 options: strength training and cardio.

What to eat after strength training when trying to build muscle?

In the case of workouts using machines and so-called free weights, your body does not use up a very large amount of carbohydrates. That is why your meals should include a balanced amount of them. It looks completely different in the case of protein, which should be provided in an amount of around 30 grams.

What to eat after cardio training?

In the case of so-called endurance training sessions (running, cycling, etc.), the situation is quite the opposite. Protein intake can take a secondary role while staying at a balanced level, while replenishing carbohydrates becomes much more important.

Second – your goal

The type of activity is very often also linked to the results you want to achieve. If you want to build large, impressive muscles, then naturally protein should be one of the main elements of your diet. If you want to run farther or at a better pace, pay more attention to carbohydrates.

Third – timing

It is worth asking yourself not only what to eat after training, but also when it is best to do it. Once again, a lot depends on the specific activity and the goals you set for yourself. Protein-rich meals are worth eating basically right after activity, while carbohydrates can also be spaced out over several hours if the training was really intense.

Eating after an evening workout. What should you keep in mind?

A large number of people who train, both in the gym and during various classes, do their workouts in the late afternoon. In such cases, the question “What to eat after an evening workout?” seems perfectly valid.

Although there are many legends and myths about eating at this time of day, in reality these meals should not differ from the standard dishes you eat when your workout ends at other times of the day.

The condition? Don’t go to sleep straight after eating. Give your body at least a few hours to digest. This will support effective recovery and, above all, much better sleep.

Good to know!

Remember that the information above is only a foundation and at the same time a universal guide. Every diet, both before and after training, should be tailored to your needs, capabilities and preferences.

Diet sorted, what’s next?

The main factors responsible for your success in sport, both amateur and professional, are certainly motivation, consistency, determination and diet. However, it is also worth thinking about additional elements that can help you “get even more out of it”, such as clothing.
